EXERGIA played a central role in revising the Ethiopia Biofuels Strategy, which was officially launched by Ethiopia’s Ministry of Water and Energy on 23 June 2025. The revised Strategy, introducing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) as a national priority for the first time constitutes a key step aligning Ethiopia with global decarbonization goals and opening new opportunities for clean energy leadership in East Africa.
Our work laid the groundwork for:
- A 5% SAF blending target by 2030
- A clear institutional and policy framework for SAF scale-up
- Roadmaps for sustainable feedstock, certification, and infrastructure
Overall, the revised strategy matters for country as:
- 100% of jet fuel is currently imported — SAF creates a path to energy independence
- There are abundant local resources — from agri-residues to renewable energy — making them ideal feedstock for domestic SAF production
- Supports Ethiopia’s Green Development Strategy
- Positions Ethiopia as a future SAF hub, especially with the new international airport in development
